In a world where Formula 1 drivers are used to dodging rivals, cutting sharp turns, and maneuvering through dangerous laps, an unexpected competitor crept onto the track this week—no, not another unretired former world champion, but a local lizard looking for its moment of fame at the Singapore Grand Prix.
As drivers zoomed around the Marina Bay circuit during the first practice session, a big lizard nonchalantly sauntered onto the asphalt, triggering a yellow flag and, undoubtedly, a few expletives. This is far from the first time the Singapore circuit has been graced by local reptilian enthusiasts, but this lizard brought its A-game, parking itself right at the exit of the high-profile Turn 8 hairpin.
“Ah! There’s a lizard again on the track, a smaller one this time,” Max Verstappen lamented over the team radio, presumably also wondering if he needed to start reading up on lizard-dodging techniques.
Gianpiero Lambiase, Verstappen’s race engineer, replied with the zinger of the day: “Understood. Maybe Godzilla had a kid.” If that’s the case, let’s hope Mothra isn’t plotting a grand entrance during the actual race.
But wait, there’s more! Not one to be outdone, a second lizard made its track debut at Turn 9, reported by none other than Carlos Sainz. At this point, one must wonder whether these lizards were merely trying to get a front-row view of the action or plotting to form their own racing league.
Just before you thought the lizards had retreated to plan for next year’s infiltration, George Russell reported yet a third lizard on the track. At this rate, the Singapore Grand Prix could also qualify as a wildlife safari.
Jokes aside, preparations are still in full swing for Sunday’s main event. However, if you’re placing bets, maybe consider the likelihood of a lizard making it to the podium—they’ve certainly shown they have the audacity and the agility to share the track with the world’s best.
So, as the engines rev up and the excitement builds for the Singapore Grand Prix, just remember: the real race might be between Formula 1 drivers and Mother Nature’s unexpected contestants. Keep your eyes peeled—these lizards are in it to win it, or at least snag some excellent Instagram content.
