Former Olympian Mary Lou Retton was arrested and charged with DUI on May 17 in West Virginia, with the news just barely leaking out. It’s shocking to many considering Retton has been a poster child for health and physical fitness her whole life.
Florida cop attacked by wild turkey after he calls it a “chicken.”
Retton captivated the nation back in 1984 during the Olympics when she won five medals. She also became the first American female gymnast to win gold in the all-around competition. Overnight, Retton became a sort of national hero, being featured on a Wheaties box and getting big interviews with media outlets.
She’s more or less stayed in the spotlight since and has been active on social media. For example, she has almost 100,000 followers on Instagram alone.
Understandably, people are floored to learn about Retton’s DUI arrest. But we don’t know any details, simply that she was arrested, charged, and later released with a $1,500 bond. What substance she was allegedly under the influence and other information isn’t known, so we would avoid any speculation on the matter until Retton or her representative issue a statement.
Just two years ago, Retton landed in the ICU with a rare type of pneumonia as fans worried it might be the end of the road for their idol. Now, it seems this latest development is an emotional swing in the opposite direction.
Interestingly, even though Retton pulled through despite doctors warning her family she might not, she has since told the media she relies on oxygen treatments every day. According to the former gymnast, she was left with scarring on her lungs, making physical activity much harder.
Surely that’s taken its toll on Retton. And now we learn she’s had a brush with the law. Hopefully whatever she’s facing she doesn’t do so alone but gets the proper help.
