With the recent reveal of the second generation Ford Expedition SSV (that’s short for special service vehicle) the Blue Oval is flexing its law enforcement muscles. After all, the automaker has been catering to the boys in blue, not to mention other first responders, for over 75 years. Bringing that experience to bear on this new model, it’s loaded with features police, firefighters, and others will find attractive.

As a modern police vehicle, the SUV has power outlets throughout for charging or running different devices in the field. More groundbreaking is the standard 24-inch panoramic screen that serves as a gauge cluster, allowing departments to put critical information in an officer’s field of vision. That means less having to look down at a laptop while rushing to an emergency call.
Another interesting feature is called Dark Car. When activated, the mode turns of all the interior lights, allowing cops to sit inside the vehicle undetected, a critical element for stakeouts and other situations. Plus, there’s a red dome light for further discretion.
A Police Accessory Independent Timed-Release Output system keeps unauthorized people from accessing the cargo area, which might have firearms and other critical equipment. To open the liftgate, the release inside the cabin gives an officer 45 seconds to then open the tailgate before it’s locked again.
Power comes from a 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6, which is what you get in a regular Expedition, so no surprise there. Four-wheel drive is included as are Ford’s various trailer assistance technologies which come in handy for game wardens, marine law enforcement departments, etc.
Law enforcement agencies have a lot of options to choose from with the Expedition SSV. The regular model comes with two rows of seating and cloth upholstery, but an Expedition Max SSV can be had with three rows of seats, including a 60/40 split on the third row.
Plus, the vehicle comes with a split tailgate, allowing officers quick access to gear without opening the lower portion. The lower tailgate can support up to 500 lbs. (insert joke about donuts here).
The 2025 Expedition SSV makes the sixth current-production Ford that’s designed for law enforcement duties. The other five are the Police Interceptor Utility (Explorer), F-150 Police Responder, F-150 Lightning Pro SSV, Transit Prisoner Transport Vehicle, and Mach-E GT.
