The first example of Ford’s new Mustang Dark Horse SC has sold for $1.25 million, making it the most expensive sports car produced by the automaker so far this century. The sale took place through Barrett-Jackson as part of a charity auction benefiting research efforts focused on Type 1 diabetes.
The Dark Horse SC represents the next evolution of Ford’s seventh-generation Mustang performance lineup. Introduced just weeks into 2026, the supercharged model builds on the Dark Horse, which replaced the Mach 1 as the top-performing Mustang beginning in the 2024 model year. The SC variant is positioned between the standard Dark Horse and the ultra-exclusive Mustang GTD, which carries a significantly higher price point.
The car sold at auction was a Shadow Black Mustang Dark Horse SC Track Pack Special Edition, identified as VIN 001 of the new model line. While the auction vehicle appeared in a fixed specification, Ford has stated that the winning bidder will be allowed to configure their Dark Horse SC to their own preferences, despite the VIN 001 designation.
Unlike traditional Mustangs, the Dark Horse SC removes the rear seats entirely, emphasizing its focus as a dedicated sports car. Power comes from a supercharged 5.2-liter V8 engine derived from the Mustang GTD program. While full specifications have not been released, Ford officials have confirmed the engine produces well over 700 horsepower. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a dual-clutch transmission.
The Track Pack Special Edition adds a range of performance-focused components, including Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes, Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tires, carbon-fiber wheels, and extensive carbon-fiber aerodynamic elements. The package also includes a large rear wing capable of generating up to 620 pounds of downforce at 180 mph. Additional features include a Carbon Exterior package, unique hood graphics, Race Red brake calipers, Solar Red Recaro sport seats, and 3D-printed titanium components sourced from the GTD.
The Special Edition is available exclusively for the 2026 model year and can be ordered in Shadow Black or Oxford White, with an optional black-painted roof. Ford plans to begin showroom availability of the Mustang Dark Horse SC later this summer.
With its record-setting auction result, extreme performance focus, and limited early production, the Dark Horse SC signals Ford’s intent to compete directly with high-end global sports cars while redefining what a front-engine Mustang can represent in the modern performance landscape.
