Oracle Red Bull Racing teamed up with partner Honda to take Formula One driver Yuki Tsunoda on a tour of Japanese car culture in Tokyo recently. He was of course in town for the Japanese Grand Prix, so a guy with a tuned Honda NSX took him out on the town as the dropped into different meets to see how diverse the car culture is in the island nation.
Watch Yuki Tsunoda race a stock car on a dirt oval.
Whoever came up with this idea needs a promotion. It’s a brilliant approach, exposing people in other parts of the world to not only some of the traditional Japanese car groups, but also giving a glimpse at what the youth in Japan are doing with their cars now.
The approaches run the range, from those who are tuning their rides to be quicker and handle better to the stance crowd going for as much negative camber as possible. Others focus on eye candy through body kits, lots of lighting effects, wraps, dazzling wheels, and more.
They even check out some Bosozoku rides with their garish exhausts reaching high into the air, among other in-your-face mods.
Plus, the pair visit a tuning shop, Advance Technical Factory, checking out the legends behind ome JDM tuning trends.
Even though we might not be big fans of every build or even every philosophy in the Japanese tuner culture, it’s still interesting to not only see the cars but hear why the owners have made different modifications. After all, tuning is influenced by the wider culture and societal values where a person lives, including if they’re trying to push back against those and why.
For example, one guy says he loves Honda because he grew up watching F1 with teams using Honda engines. He roots for Oracle Red Bull Racing for that very reason.
The video isn’t too long and is definitely a must-watch for any JDM fan.
