We do love crazy car builds, including the excellent bad ideas like this homemade Formula One go-kart. At least we’re calling it a go-kart, in part because it’s not nearly as powerful or quick as a real F1 racer. Still, the build is impressive, and it’s being documented by the guy who came up with this crazy idea.
Excellent bad idea: LS swapped Baja Bug.
You can watch the progress on the Boosted Lifestyle YouTube channel, which has other car goodness as well. But he just recently posted this first test run of the F1 build and it looks incredibly fun.
As you can see, the tubular chassis is homemade, as are a few other things about this ride. A number of Mazda Miata parts are in there, but this thing makes one of those roadsters look big and portly.
Driving on the road with this vehicle, which the guy does to test it out, seems gutsy, to say the least. We’ve almost been wiped out tooling around in a low-slung sports car or on a motorcycle, but this thing is even less visible. A lot of cars, especially trucks and SUVs, could just roll right over it.
Plus, it’s obviously frigid outside and the pavement might be a little wet, so traction probably isn’t optimal on the cold rubber. But man does this look like fun!
He does show an incredible amount of restraint, not really juicing this thing in its first run. That might be because he’s poured countless hours into getting it to this point. Funny how that works.
Also, he said the clutch was slipping. So maybe it wasn’t responsibility holding him back after all? There are other issues, like “spongy” brakes. So hooning this thing hard would be a really horrible idea.
This build has been two years in the making and it’s obviously still a work in progress. It should be incredible when complete, plus it shows what determination when applied to a worthwhile goal can accomplish.
