We’ve seen some interesting car transport accidents before, but this one out of China involving a load of new Toyota Land Cruiser Prados is perhaps the craziest, at least in a while. We’ve seen transport trucks tip over before, but not quite like this.
Potato chips cause trucker to crash big.
Dashcam footage of the incident shared by Australian automotive site Drive shows the truck drive on the wrong side of the road while honking its horn, passing a slower taxi and our camera car. But it suddenly has to swerve as a semi-truck comes in the opposite direction.
That’s an ill-advised move because the truck goes off the road with its driver’s side tires where there’s a small brick wall, unbalancing the whole load.
Like a giant tree which finally has its truck chopped enough, the whole truck and trailer tip over in one fast motion. Somehow, the taxi and its occupants are spared. They stumble out after the two top vehicles on the carrier land in front and behind the taxi, obviously dazed and confused by the sudden accident.
This crash is a perfect example of why you should’ve swerve in a collision situation because it usually makes things worse. The car carrier and semi-truck didn’t hit each other head-on, so nothing would’ve happened if the transport driver had just kept steering straight. Instead, he just damaged each vehicle on the trailer and created a huge mess to clean up.
There’s a lesson to be learned here.
What’s really weird about this video, but maybe not for China, is the new Prados are just on an open trailer with no delivery wraps, dirt coating them from the roadway. We guess once the dealers take delivery they give the rigs a good washing, but it just is an odd practice to us.
