Vince Zampella, the influential video game developer whose work helped shape some of the best-selling franchises in modern gaming, has died at 55 after a single-vehicle crash in the San Gabriel Mountains north of Los Angeles. The accident occurred around 12:45 p.m. Sunday on Angeles Crest Highway when the 2026 Ferrari 296 GTS Zampella was driving veered off the winding roadway, struck a concrete barrier and erupted into flames, authorities and multiple news outlets report.
California Highway Patrol officers responding to the scene found the Ferrari engulfed in fire. Zampella, who was behind the wheel, was trapped in the wreckage and pronounced dead at the scene, the CHP said. A passenger in the vehicle was ejected on impact and later died at a hospital, according to NBC Los Angeles. Investigators have not yet released details on what caused the car to leave the road, and alcohol or drugs have not been ruled out or confirmed.
Zampella’s passing has sent shockwaves through the gaming community and beyond. As co-founder of Infinity Ward in 2002, he helped launch Call of Duty, the military shooter franchise that would go on to sell hundreds of millions of copies worldwide and become one of the most profitable entertainment properties ever created. After departing Infinity Ward, Zampella and partner Jason West launched Respawn Entertainment in 2010, where he continued to lead innovation with titles like Titanfall, Titanfall 2, Apex Legends, and STAR WARS Jedi: Fallen Order.

Respawn, now a subsidiary of Electronic Arts, has lauded Zampella as a “visionary creator” whose influence stretched far beyond individual titles to shape how modern games tell stories and connect players. In recent years, he also oversaw work on the Battlefield franchise, helping to steer one of gaming’s oldest shooter series into a new era.
Tributes have poured in from colleagues, players and industry figures mourning a creator whose ideas defined generations of players. Geoff Keighley, host of The Game Awards, called Zampella “a titan of the video game industry,” while EA described his death as an “unimaginable loss,” noting his profound impact on interactive entertainment.
The identity of the passenger who also died has not been publicly released as authorities continue their investigation. As more details emerge about the crash and its cause, friends, family and fans are left grappling with the sudden loss of one of gaming’s most influential figures.
