Finally, after so many racetracks getting bought and bulldozed, a man in Central California bought some land and is building a drag strip on it. This is so much better than people just continually complaining about tracks being closed without doing anything to solve the problem. In fact, it would be great if others stepped up and did similar things where they live.
Man buys a street at auction and the city wants it back.
The man lives in Mendota, which is in the Fresno area, and he purchased the land with his own money. As for the cost of constructing the drag strip, he’s kicked in his own funds and has been able to get some sponsors to donate to the cause. This is how it’s one, folks.
He told KMPH that part of the motivation for building the racetrack is to put Mendota on the map and give it something to be proud of. But, he also was bitten by the motorsports bug years ago and hopes the drag strip will enrich his daughter’s life.
KMPH spoke with the mayor of Mendota and he’s fully behind the track, reveling in the fact it’s bringing in more visitors to the small city and with them tax revenue. That’s of course key in getting a new racetrack established, having the support of local leaders, so if you want to do this yourself take note of that and come up with a plan.
Oh and the mayor gets another thing we and so many others have been saying for a long time: having a drag strip that allows members of the community to go throw down on the quarter mile helps cut down on illegal street racing. As cities and counties press to close tracks, we feel like that factor is completely ignored.
