A nonprofit organization in Lake Elsinore is scrambling after a box truck carrying nearly 500 frozen turkeys intended for a weekend food distribution event was stolen early Saturday. The theft occurred outside the U.R. Important Foundation on Auto Center Drive, where volunteers had prepared for a Grab-n-Go Food Distribution and Turkey Giveaway meant to support local families ahead of the holidays.
Deputies were alerted around 7:55 a.m., according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office. By the time authorities arrived, both the truck and the turkeys were gone. The vehicle had been packed for the morning event, leaving the organization without its primary supply of holiday meals.
The foundation’s director, Alexxa Oliver, described the disappointment among volunteers and families who arrived expecting to receive a turkey. While the group was still able to hand out some food, only a small number of households received turkeys due to the sudden loss. Oliver said the community’s response softened the blow, noting that many residents offered sympathy and support despite leaving empty-handed.
Investigators are now working to identify whoever took the truck. Authorities say nearby businesses may have surveillance systems that captured the suspects or the vehicle leaving the area. Detectives are reviewing leads, and deputies are asking residents or businesses with relevant footage or information to come forward.
The nonprofit, which regularly organizes food giveaways, had planned the turkey distribution as part of its seasonal outreach to families in need. With hundreds of meals missing, the group hopes the investigation leads to the truck’s recovery before future events are affected. For now, the foundation is relying on community support and awaiting updates from law enforcement as the search continues.
