It’s the holiday season again and that means poor choices with cars, including putting Christmas lights and reindeer antlers on them. While a red nose or even a wreath on your front grille might be a bad idea, those won’t land you a citation from law enforcement. But putting Christmas lights on your ride is a different story.
A YouTuber is arrested after buying a truck at an insurance auction.
You’ve probably seen people driving around at night with their car lit up like a Christmas tree. It looks kinda wild and fun, but you might be wondering if it’s even legal. Maybe you’re even wondering because you want to do the same thing.
In short, the answer is not even a little bit.
We looked high and low and can’t find anywhere you can legally put Christmas lights on your vehicle, then switch them on while you’re driving down the road. Before you think cops are just being killjoys, the truth is there are some good reasons for this.

In a news story out of the Denver area, a Douglas County Sheriff’s spokesman explains that Christmas lights all over a car is a huge distraction. They can make it difficult, if not impossible, to see when the driver turns on a turn signal. The dazzling effect could block out other cars on the road, and that can lead to accidents.
Some drivers are even using red and blue lights or other color combinations that can make people think they’re an emergency vehicle. We can’t believe we have to say this, but don’t do that. It’s even worse than just regular Christmas lights on your car.
Examples of law enforcement warning against this trend is present from coast to coast in the United States. We even found a story about it in Australia, with police there threatening a $300 fine for violators.
Some are blaming TikTok for this trend, but we think that’s a bit of a stretch. While some kids are getting the idea from the social media platform, we found a number of videos on other social sites used by older crowds also coaching users on how to put Christmas lights on their ride.
So keep the Christmas lights on your tree and house instead of using a whole roll of painters tape to put them on your car. In some areas, police are ready to issue citations instead of just looking the other way.
