A German man stole an excavator from a construction site, driving it around for about an hour before police were finally able to stop his destructive rampage. Every once in a while we see a story around the world about someone stealing a piece of construction equipment to sow some chaos where they live. But this story is far more serious than most, with an ending that isn’t great for the thief.
Stolen wheel loader takes police in Ohio on a wild chase.
Why exactly the 38-year-old suspect swiped the excavator isn’t clear in reports on the crime, but what he did with the equipment might give us a bit of a clue. First, on New Years Eve the guy climbed into the machine while it sat unattended at a construction site in Grünsfeld, Baden-Württemberg.

Construction workers didn’t notice the intruder until the excavator drove away while destroying the building materials at the site, reports the Mirror. Then he drove the slow machinery on the highway, police driving alongside in an effort to stop him while also trying to not get pancaked.
When he arrived at Tauberbischofsheim, the suspected exited the highway and drove to a car dealership, destroying the building entirely by ramming into the exterior walls. Perhaps he got a raw deal there?
The guy did more damage in the town as police tried stopping the huge machine. Some cruisers were damaged and three officers were injured in the melee, one seriously. Police cars are no match for a huge, treaded piece of construction machinery like an excavator.
Apparently not having any other option since the excavator was too big to take down using their cars, officers shot the driver, who died instantly. Why the man stole the machine and went on his rampage is still under investigation.
