America’s grassroots racing culture is on the brink of extinction—and the reasons why will shock you.
Once vibrant, local drag strips and racing tracks are shutting down at an alarming pace. Tracks like Irwindale Speedway, Atlanta Dragway, and Bandimere Speedway aren’t just places where speed records were set—they’re cherished cultural landmarks fading into memory. But what’s causing this disturbing trend?
In our powerful, raw documentary-style exploration, we uncover the hidden pressures forcing closures nationwide: relentless lawsuits, suburban sprawl, economic stress, and escalating noise complaints. Communities built around these tracks for generations are now fighting—and often losing—legal battles to keep their heritage alive.
This isn’t just about nostalgia—it’s about the future. As these safe, regulated venues disappear, street racing is already on the rise, posing a real danger to communities everywhere.
Watch our gripping video to understand why we may be the very last generation that gets to experience authentic, local drag racing, and what this means for the future of motorsports.
Don’t miss this critical look at a culture on the edge of extinction.

Good Day:
First a correction, Irwindale Speedway opened in 1999 on March 27th. I remember because I was on staff for close to a year and a half before that date and we were reminded of it every time we went to work because the padlocks on all of the gates used the same combination 3-27-99 (I wish that I had kept one as rememberence). Irwindal was everything that fans and racers say about it and it was struck down by the same sad truth, that the land was more valuable as industrial space… There’s no moral to the story, it’s commerce … you call it “progress” if you’re a city planner. The banked Irwindale 1/2 mile really was “LA’s Half-Mile Superspeedway” and our 1/8-Mile (NHRA-sanctioned) Drag Strip was the place were drivers of all kinds of cars from compacts to street-legal mega-horsepower machines could roar and try to do their best imitation of John Force in front of full grandstands of admiring fans instead of out the streets at midnight. It was also the place (the Drifters named it: “The House of Drift”) where that tire-smoking slideways sport went big time in the ‘States.
I’m only a PR flack, don’t take my word(s) for it, there are plenty of eye witnesses for the place, and some of them (like me) are still dabbing at their eyes after reading the above… I really wish that I didn’t need to correct that date. Thanks! -DS
