If you’re like us, you’ve been driving out in the middle of nowhere, seen those signs that read “speed enforced by aircraft” and just laughed. After all, an airplane or helicopter can’t pull you over. Plus, we’ve always thought those were just idle threats to keep the more gullible drivers in line. But they’re apparently not, at least in Wisconsin, where cops busted a speeding motorcyclist from a helicopter.

Well, Wisconsin State Patrol didn’t land the helicopter in front of the motorcycle and bust the rider that way. Instead, the helicopter was used to clock the bike going a whopping 175.7 mph on Interstate 39/90 in Rock County. That’s fast enough we’d question if the rider would survive a crash, but the guy was doing it anyway.
Of course, at that speed the motorcyclist had to weave or swim through traffic, which was likely going about 100 mph slower than him. Eventually, he slowed down but by that point the aerial unit directed ground units to the suspect.
They were able to pull the guy over without incident. That’s always a good thing since so many who try outrunning police cause a serious crash, possibly seriously injuring or killing themselves. Plus, with a helicopter above, outrunning police isn’t likely, although the guy probably didn’t know that was a factor.
Now you know in this day and age of advanced technology aerial speed enforcement is apparently not some idle threat but instead is a very real thing. Actually, the photo shared by Wisconsin State Patrol just shows a stopwatch, so we’re pretty sure they used the old VASCAR method. But remember that next time you’re cruising along in a rural area and see those signs because you’ve been warned.
And if you do get caught speeding, it’s always better to pull over and face the consequences. Running just makes the situation so much worse.
