The racing drama F1: The Movie has been nominated for four Academy Awards, including Best Picture, placing it among the most recognized films of this year’s awards season. The film also earned nominations for Best Sound, Best Visual Effects, and Best Editing, highlighting its technical and production achievements.
Brad Pitt Is Hooked On Driving F1 Cars
Released theatrically on June 27, the 2025 summer blockbuster stars Brad Pitt, Damson Idris, and Javier Bardem. The story centers on veteran driver Sonny Hayes, portrayed by Pitt, who returns to Formula 1 competition to race for a struggling team. The narrative follows the internal conflict that develops between Hayes and his younger teammate, Joshua Pierce, played by Idris, as both drivers attempt to prove themselves at the highest level of motorsport.
The film was written and directed by Joseph Kosinski, whose previous work includes large-scale action productions such as Top Gun: Maverick, Oblivion, and Tron: Legacy. Production duties were handled by Jerry Bruckheimer, along with Pitt and seven-time Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton. The collaboration aimed to blend cinematic storytelling with real-world racing authenticity.
During production, filmmakers were granted unprecedented access to Formula 1, including the ability to film at multiple circuits. That access allowed the production to incorporate real race environments into the film, contributing to its immersive on-track sequences. The movie went on to gross $631 million worldwide, establishing it as one of the year’s most commercially successful releases.
In the Best Picture category, F1: The Movie will compete against Bugonia, Frankenstein, Hamnet, Marty Supreme, One Battle After Another, The Secret Agent, Sentimental Value, Sinners, and Train Dreams. Its Best Sound nomination places it alongside Frankenstein, One Battle After Another, Sinners, and Sirāt. For Best Editing, it will face Marty Supreme, One Battle After Another, Sentimental Value, and Sinners. In Best Visual Effects, the film competes with Avatar: Fire and Ash, Jurassic World: Rebirth, The Lost Bus, and Sinners.
Industry observers have noted that while the film may not align perfectly with traditional racing purist expectations, its technical execution stands out. The race sequences combine footage from real events with carefully integrated visual effects, relying heavily on editing to create seamless, high-intensity action.
The 98th Academy Awards ceremony will air Sunday, March 15, beginning at 7 p.m. EST on ABC, where F1: The Movie will contend for recognition across both top-tier and technical categories.
