Victoria Police are investigating the theft of a classic 1984 Pontiac Trans Am that was taken from a busy shopping area in Melbourne’s southeast on Tuesday afternoon.
The vehicle was stolen from the Village Green carpark at the corner of Ferntree Gully Road and Springvale Road in Mulgrave. Authorities say the theft occurred sometime between 3:30 p.m. and 4 p.m., during a period when multiple people were in the area.
Police believe two male offenders were involved. The suspects were seen traveling in a black Toyota Hilux fitted with stolen registration plates identified as AJ-39. CCTV footage captured the suspects at the Village Green shortly before the theft occurred.
After the Trans Am was taken, the stolen vehicle was seen traveling in tandem with the black Hilux, with the utility vehicle following closely behind. Investigators believe the two vehicles left the area together and continued traveling as a convoy.
The stolen Pontiac is described as a dark silver 1984 Trans Am displaying Victorian club registration plates numbered 11085-H. Police say the vehicle’s distinctive appearance may make it easier for members of the public to recognize.
Authorities are urging anyone who may have seen the Trans Am or the black Hilux after the theft to come forward. Investigators are particularly interested in dashcam footage showing the two vehicles traveling together after leaving the Mulgrave area.
Police have asked anyone who spots the stolen Trans Am not to approach the vehicle or any occupants, but instead to contact Victoria Police immediately. Members of the public with information related to the theft, including video footage or sightings, are encouraged to report what they know.
Victoria Police can be contacted on 131 444, while anonymous information can be provided through Crime Stoppers at 1800 333 000. Investigators say even small details could assist in locating the stolen vehicle and identifying those responsible.
