A recent beach recovery in Florida turned into a cautionary tale after a Ford Ranger Raptor failed to free a stuck Ford Explorer, leaving both vehicles immobilized in deep sand and requiring professional assistance.
The incident unfolded along a stretch of coastline in Volusia County, where drivers are still permitted to access hardpacked beach areas once used by early stock car racers. While the sand may appear firm, conditions can change quickly, especially closer to the dunes, catching inexperienced drivers off guard.
The situation began when the driver of a Ford Explorer ventured too far into soft sand and became severely stuck. The vehicle’s front end buried itself deeply, eliminating the traction needed to escape under its own power. With the crossover unable to move, a nearby Ford Ranger Raptor attempted to help by towing it free.
Despite the Ranger Raptor’s off-road-focused design and powerful twin-turbocharged V6 engine, the recovery effort quickly went sideways. Lacking proper technique and experience, the pickup’s driver applied throttle as both vehicles struggled for grip. Instead of pulling the Explorer out, the Ranger Raptor dug itself deeper into the sand, eventually leaving both vehicles stranded.
Video footage shared by Sandtow, a local towing company serving Volusia County, showed both vehicles throwing sand as their wheels spun, accomplishing little more than burying themselves further. According to Sandtow, both vehicles became “framed out,” meaning their frames were resting directly on the sand with no tire contact capable of providing traction.
Sandtow ultimately stepped in with a modified Toyota Tacoma and completed the recovery. Using proper equipment and experience, the Tacoma quickly pulled both the Explorer and the Ranger Raptor back onto solid ground, ending the ordeal without further incident.
The towing company has encountered similar situations before, including a Ford Mustang that required rescue from Daytona Beach several months earlier. In each case, the lesson remains the same: beach driving can be deceptive, and even capable vehicles can become helpless without the right knowledge and preparation.
