A routine ride to the hospital turned into an unexpected delivery when a Waymo passenger gave birth inside one of the company’s driverless vehicles while traveling through San Francisco, according to the autonomous vehicle company.
The incident occurred Monday night as the passenger was being transported to UCSF Medical Center. During the trip, Waymo’s remote Rider Support team detected activity that appeared unusual for a standard ride. The team initiated contact with the passenger to check on their status and quickly learned the rider was in active labor.
After confirming the situation, Waymo’s support staff contacted emergency services while allowing the vehicle to continue its programmed route to the hospital. The car remained en route as the birth took place inside the vehicle.
Both the parent and the newborn arrived at the hospital safely, Waymo said. No complications were reported in connection with the delivery, and emergency responders were alerted during the process.
Waymo acknowledged that while such events are rare, this was not the first time a baby has been born inside one of its autonomous vehicles. The company characterized the incident as an unusual but memorable moment in the operation of its ride-hailing service, which operates without a human driver behind the wheel.
The company’s rider support system is designed to monitor trips in real time and respond to unexpected situations by communicating with passengers and coordinating with emergency services when necessary. In this case, that system played a key role in identifying the emergency and ensuring that help was contacted promptly.
Waymo’s fleet of fully autonomous vehicles operates in several cities and is intended to provide transportation without direct human control. While the vehicles follow predetermined routes and traffic rules, they are supported by remote teams capable of intervening in situations that fall outside typical ride scenarios.
The delivery adds a unique chapter to the evolving story of autonomous transportation, highlighting how driverless technology can intersect with unpredictable human moments. For Waymo, it also serves as a reminder that even the most advanced transportation systems can become the setting for life’s most unexpected events.
