A piece of Kobe Bryant’s family history has been lovingly restored thanks to the efforts of his former Los Angeles Lakers teammate, Shaquille O’Neal. The basketball legend quietly commissioned a full restoration of a 1996 Toyota Land Cruiser once owned and driven by Bryant and his family, unveiling the finished project as a surprise gift to Bryant’s mother on what would have been his 47th birthday.

The project began earlier this year when O’Neal reached out to Effortless Motors, a Riverside-based shop specializing in custom and exotic vehicles. The SUV had seen better days after years of exposure to harsh winters in Philadelphia and the desert sun of Las Vegas. Rust covered the frame, the seats were torn, the doors barely worked, and the air conditioning had long since failed.
Anthony C. Hall, a close friend of O’Neal, said the Land Cruiser was a true family vehicle, shared between Bryant, his parents, and sisters. “It was an old family vehicle that everyone tended to drive — Kobe, his sisters, his mom, his dad,” Hall said.
When co-owners Daniel Ubario and Ahmad Abdelrahman of Effortless Motors learned of the project’s significance, they were both humbled and emotional. “When he told me that was the car Kobe drove in high school, I was in shock,” Abdelrahman recalled. “I was almost in tears.”
O’Neal’s only request was that the restoration stay authentic — no flashy upgrades, just a faithful return to how the SUV looked when Kobe drove it as a teenager. He also gave them just 90 days to finish, ensuring the work would be completed in time for Bryant’s birthday in August.
On schedule, the restored Land Cruiser was delivered to Kobe’s mother, Pam Bryant, who was moved by the gesture. “She was very happy that we brought the car back exactly the way he drove it,” Ubario said.
What began as a humble restoration became something more — a shared moment of remembrance between teammates, family, and fans, honoring the legacy of one of basketball’s greatest icons.
