It’s not every day a piece of venerated Formula One history becomes available to the public to purchase, but this 1976 McLaren M23 racecar is in fact on the open market. This is a genuinely rare chance to own Chassis No. M23-12, which has a thorough and impressive history. Plus, with this the new owner could compete in the Grand Prix de Monaco HIstorique Serie E.

All those are reasons to really pay attention to an opportunity like this. However, there is a cost associated, of course, but the listing for this racecar doesn’t put a number to it. Instead, one must inquire about the price, so if you’re concerned about that you likely can’t afford it.
The M23 chassis is one of the most successful to come out of the McLaren Grand Prix factory. In fact, anticipation for it before its release in 1973 and it didn’t disappoint. With the M23 McLaren drivers were racking up wins in no time, including James Hunt capturing the 1976 World Championship.
Second to last of all the M23 cars built, this one was the final one made for “works” use, debuting in the 1977 US Grand Prix West in Long Beach, California, piloted by Jochen Mass. It saw plenty of F1 action before retiring and being sold in late 1978.
Its history from there is well-documented, with notable owners, some of them racing it in exhibition events. The current owner has campaigned it in FIA Masters Historic Formula One Championship events across Europe, so the new owner could choose to do something similar.
Everything on it is represented as working well, including the Geoff Richardson Ford-DFV engine, so it’s a “turn-key Grand Prix car.” If that’s exciting to you or someone you know, this is a unique opportunity to own just such a vehicle.
