We don’t see too many people working on an old Chevy Suburban, so to see a car YouTuber rescued a 1972 and do an LT1 engine swap on it is neat. We’re old enough to remember when these things were still fairly common and rode in some back in the day, so perhaps we have a bit of an emotional attachment to the big SUVs.
Learn how some guys built their own Koenigsegg Jesko for just $100.
After all, Chevy was way ahead of its time with a full-size SUV you could load the whole family inside. While plenty of people talk about Chrysler inventing the minivan, not as many are talking about these beauties and the innovation they pioneered.
Also, this Suburban was a truck at heart. And trucks back then weren’t pretty and luxurious – they were no-nonsense work machines.
This ’72 Suburban is genuinely rough, having not run in a long time. In fact, the thing is literally falling apart as the YouTuber drags it to his house so he can put an LT1 in it. Once in the shop, you can clearly see it’s riddled with rust. Most of the rocker panels and floorboards are just Swiss cheese.
A lot of people would just give up and sell the Suburban as scrap metal. But this guy soldiers on because he has a vision. He also has a history with this classic SUV, so perhaps that helps spur him forward with the project.
In this video you get to see him start to build the LT1 he’s going to put in the Suburban, and that’s it. He says the plan is to work on this interspersed with his other projects, so just getting the thing running and driving with operational brakes is going to take time. Eventually, he’ll address the many other issues on the old Chevy and we can’t wait to see what kind of shape this project takes.
