With snowstorms hitting parts of the US that don’t normally get such things, those driving trucks with four-wheel-drive are being reminded of how awesome they are. While putting power down at all four corners won’t stop you from sliding and doesn’t make you invincible, it does help with not getting stuck as conditions deteriorate.
Watch Texas drivers in their muscle cars struggle in the snow.
Dashcam footage out of the Atlanta area sent to us by a reader shows how his Ram 1500 handles the snow far better than cars and crossovers. After all, when the going gets tough, trucks will get you going, especially a good body-on-frame pickup with four-wheel-drive and proper tires.
In the footage, which we’ve included for your viewing pleasure, the reader is driving along in his Ram truck at the begging of a fairly steep slope in the road when the traffic ahead crawls to a stop. He said he didn’t want to get stuck on the steep grade, understanding that continuing to move forward is better than stopping, then trying to regain traction.
So, instead of stopping like all the cars and crossovers ahead, he was able to use the four-wheel-drive system and higher ground clearance and hope the median, checking in advance that no oncoming traffic was approaching.
The guy could then safely continue up the slope as the other drivers sat in the lane of traffic, helpless and blocking anyone else from getting through. Some might think what the Ram driver did was dangerous, but he wasn’t speeding along, swerving around. Instead, he maintained control of his truck and safely got out of a bad situation instead of sitting in the building line of vehicles.
Even with an all-wheel-drive car you couldn’t do this because of ground clearance issues. This is why we love trucks, especially in sticky conditions like this.
