Carjackings are one of the many vehicle-related crimes which have been on the rise in certain areas over the past several years. They’re particularly scary because people can get seriously hurt or worse during one. But if you think carjackings are something which never happens to the rich and famous, Demi Tebow, wife of former NFL quarterback Tim Tebow, is here to dispel that misconception.
Stolen GMC Sierra bust gets spicy in a hurry.
She has a new book out and so is doing the interview rounds at different shows to promote it. One of the things in her memoir is the almost fatal carjacking she survived years ago. We’ve included her interview on CBS Mornings where they ask about that life-altering experience.
The crime in question happened in Tebow’s home county of South Africa, but something like that sadly could happen in the US, Canda, UK, or elsewhere. She had recently been crowned Miss South Africa and was on the way to an event when she was stopped in her vehicle at a red light.
Five men surrounded her car, some of them armed. She tried running but was pushed back into the vehicle and told she was going with the carjackers. One of her attackers held a gun to her head, but she punched him in the throat and was able to get away on foot.
But what also traumatized her was that nobody was willing to help as she asked repeatedly. Finally, a young girl gave her a ride. That’s another disturbing fact: so many don’t want to get involved when someone is in need.
Rather than just focus on herself, Tebow has made it her mission to educate other women about violence and how they can protect themselves. That’s fantastic since many armed carjackers purposely target women.
There are many things you can do to guard against armed carjackings, mainly staying aware of your surroundings and knowing how to escape if you do get cornered. Thankfully she was able to survive the ordeal, but not everyone is so lucky.
