While a lot of people seem to have divided opinions on the R35 Nissan GT-R, it’s a platform that’s proven itself on the track. After all opinions are just that and results are something only the unreasonable would argue about. That’s what makes this particular Godzilla that set a world record all the more compelling.
After lining up at TX2K25 on the first day, it threw down on the quarter mile after suffering a difficulty on the line. In an amazing feat, the driver was able to pull off an elapsed time of 6.482 seconds, which is more than respectable, it’s a world record for the R35.
Understandably, the team behind the Nissan was ecstatic once the time flashed up for all to see. Countless hours spent in the garage and on drag strips fine tuning the machine were rewarded in that single moment.
For people who don’t race, the reaction of the team seems a little weird, possibly over the top. But if you’ve raced, pouring everything into chasing a record, making minute changes or even drastic ones in the quest to shave off hundredths of a second, you get it.
Now that production of the Nissan GT-R R35 is set to end this year, some people who before had all kinds of complaints about the car are feeling a little nostalgic. It had a tough act to follow after the R34 captured the hearts of so many.
Plus, when Americans or anyone can’t have a performance ride, it becomes larger than life. The ones we have in this market we can pick apart all day long, and that undoubtedly has been in part why the R35 has caught some flack.
Ultimately, runs like this one will help the R35 age well as it fades into the sunset after 17 years in production. Considering its predecessors had much shorter production runs and the R35 is still a relevant force today, that alone is worthy of respect.
