Whether you’re a participant on the drag strip or are merely a spectator, The War in the Woods comes with plenty of sketchy risk and rewarding fun. Few tracks in the United States have such a janky setup and yet draw a huge crowd, with plenty of rip roaring crashes to make everything just a little bit more interesting.
John Force’s crash is a reminder to everyone that racing is dangerous.
It’s almost like someone took drag racing and combined it with rally racing, making for one awesome motorsport gathering. And nobody helps capture the spirit of the event on film quite like 1320video.
Their latest installment on The War in the Woods is every bit as pulse-pounding fun as others in the past. Clocking in at an hour and twenty-two minutes, it covers the spring gathering rather thoroughly. If you’ve heard of this event and want to know more, it’s worth watching the whole thing.
If you haven’t heard of this gathering and are curious, the video is worth your time. Basically, you should just watch it. Instead of the staged “outlaw racing” you get on cable TV, this is the real deal.
Some of the builds seem a little sketchy. It’s great to see how creative people are in grassroots racing. We sometimes tire of all the fancy corporate motorsports events. They’re just so sterile in comparison. But this shows real enthusiasm for cars and racing.
The track itself is just sketchy. There’s a grass strip in the middle for most of the way, the surface isn’t exactly smooth as glass, and the only barriers are pretty insufficient.
All that means the crowd sometimes gets in on the action. Like there’s no much standing between them and the cars when they wreck out, which happens often. If you like risks and adrenaline, sitting further down the drag strip where you can feel the racers fly by at over 100 mph, with the potential for some epic wrecks right in your lap, is a good way to get that fix.
Speaking of the crowd, it can get a little rowdy at night as everything takes on a club-like atmosphere. Fights break out, smoke’s in the air, and the energy is something you either love or hate.
