People are already excited to get their hands on the freshly announced BMW M2 Racing, but the Bavarians want test it around the ‘Ring first. We wouldn’t be surprised to learn it’s had some outings at the Green Hell during development, but this time it’s going to be tested publicly and in a most grueling manner during he 24 Hours of Nurburgring competition.
Someone swapped a Hellephant V8 into a MKIV Supra.
That’s right, BMW M Motorsport will be flogging the new M2 Racing around the Nurburgring for the 24-hour endurance race. It will be held June 21 and 22, in case you don’t already know.
While it will be cool to see the new racecar in action, BMW will be using the competition to gather valuable data as it buttons up the final design. After all, the M2 Racing will travel over 18,000 miles during he endurance race, subjected to constant abuse.
BMW will be able to further understand where common points of breakage are on the racecar. It will also push the performance envelope, providing valuable feedback on track performance. Likely, the M2 Racing has never been driven hard for 24 hours straight.
In case you missed the recent reveal of the BMW M2 Racing, it’s an entry-level racecar for anyone just getting into motorsports or who is a hobby racer. In other words, it’s cheaper than other options from BMW.
Instead of the 3.0-liter straight-six out of the street legal version of the M2, the Racing version uses a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder borrowed from the 2 Series Gran Coupe. Before you think it’s a some pushover, the mill produces 313-horsepower and 296 lb.-ft. of torque.
Plus, the lighter engine should help with balance and cornering perfomance, a key component of successful racing.
The Nurburgring is a respected circuit thanks to its many technical challenges, so this will be a true test of the new racecar.
