Usually when someone has their truck repossessed it’s because they’re in financial trouble, but tennis star Tommy Paul had a different reason. The guy’s doing just fine when it comes to money, thanks to a thriving career and Motorola spokesman deal, but something else resulted in the repo man paying him a visit.
After the Spanish GP, George Russell isn’t happy with Max Verstappen.
The culprit, according to Paul, was automatic bill pay. That might sound ridiculous, but we know people who literally can’t function without it, and that’s apparently where the professional athlete is.
Switching banks a few months ago, Paul says he didn’t realize the automatic payments for his Ford F-150 were no longer being withdrawn and sent to the lender. He believes he was about three payments behind when a tow truck took the pickup in the middle of the night, reports The Guardian.
What we can’t believe is the lender didn’t reach out and contact Paul after the first missed payment, alerting him to the problem. It seems like that would’ve been the initial move, in this case easily fixing everything.
Even more shocking, the Ford was taken while Paul was in Europe for the French Open. He realized the truck was gone when his trainer asked the professional tennis player to check the security cameras at his house to see if there were any packages sitting on the porch.
When Paul pulled up the cameras, he immediately realized his F-150 was just gone. Again, we can’t believe the repo man or the lender didn’t contact him after the pickup was taken, lest he think it was stolen.
Instead, Paul had to go back in the security camera footage, watching the repo truck appear in the middle of the night, hooking up to the Ford and taking it. That’s when he thought for sure someone stole it.
Let this be a lesson to eveyrone: if you use automatic bill pay, it’s easy to forget about payments being made. That’s why going through your finances regularly is a great idea, helping you to catch these sorts of mistakes early.
