Arguably one of the most famous racecars ever, which starred in one of the greatest car movies of all time, Steve McQueen’s 1969 Porsche 917K is the stuff of legends. For those who have piles of cash and love collecting rare and significant rides, news that the vehicle is heading for the auction block next month has them counting their pennies in eager anticipation.
Watch and hear another Porsche 917K in action.
Originally purchased by Steve McQueen and Solar Productions from the Porsche factory in 1970, Chassis No. 917-022 was destined for greatness. After all, it was the hero car used in shots for Le Mans where McQueen was behind the wheel.
The racecar looks as good as it did when McQueen sat in it, thanks to a restoration that was completed in August 2024. With the professionals at Cavaglieri Restorations on the job, the Porsche was restored to the same specs as when it starred in Le Mans. All mechanical components were also refreshed, ensuring this historic ride operates correctly.
Thanks to that restoration, the iconic Gulf livery, beloved by many gearheads, presents fantastically.
What’s really amazing about this Porsche 917K is it has equipment others don’t. The production crew outfitted the car with camera mounts and brackets, all of which are still intact. They’re like GoPro mounts from way back.
Adding to the allure of this amazing car is the list of famous owners. The current one is by far the most famous and is known to be a huge Porsche fan, the one and only Jerry Seinfeld. He bought the 917K in 2001 and commissioned the restoration.
Now, for whatever reason, Seinfeld has seen fit to pass this historic racecar on to the next owner. It will undoubtedly fetch a high top bid when the dust settles at Mecum’s Kissimmee event on January 18. And all eyes will be on this lot as anticipation is running sky high.
To pump up the excitement further, Mecum Auctions even put out a three minute trailer about this Porsche, which we’ve included. This is going to be huge.
