While many car shoppers back in the day didn’t know what to make of the Mopar wing cars like this 1970 Plymouth Superbird, Richard Petty certainly appreciated the aerodynamic design. Now a lucky bidder will have the chance to own the former NASCAR racer’s personal ride, complete with his autograph on the exterior and interior.
Frankie Muniz suffers mechanical problems in NASCAR race.
Being that The King likes speed, this Superbird appropriately is equipped with the 440 V8. Some might find it disappointing it’s paired with an automatic transmission, but for many that’s actually a positive, make of that what you will. At least the driveline is the factory original.
This Mopar not only looks great, it apparently purrs thanks to a complete restoration done by Petty’s Garage back in 2014. During that process, Petty profiles were embroidered in the seat headrests.
The Alpine White paint, black vinyl roof, and all the graphics look amazing. With the autograph on the trunk lid, under the clearcoat, this is a muscle car you can take to shows and blow everyone away. Even if someone else has a Superbird or a Dodge Charger Daytona, this one will stand out as unique.
On the inside is another signature from Petty himself on the dash. He also penned a message to the new owner: “Take care of my car!”
To help authenticate this Plymouth, it comes with the title in Petty Enterprises, Inc’s name as well as a signed letter from Richard Petty confirming it’s the only Superbird he has ever owned. Plus, this ride has been thoroughly documented thanks to it having been featured on numerous TV shows.
This 1970 Plymouth Superbird will cross the auction block at the Mecum Kissimmee 2025 event on Saturday, January 18.
