Leaving valuables in your car is never a good idea, including your Olympic gold medals. One Olympian learned this the hard way when he had four of his medals swiped from his parked car in Melbourne, Australia recently, making for one of the strangest theft cases we’ve seen in a while.
A woman blamed her attempt to steal a car on Kanye West.
After all, it’s not like one can easily sell Olympic medals at the local pawn shop or on Facebook Marketplace. The thief probably wasn’t thinking about that when he swiped the unique memorabilia, instead mesmerized by the gold and thinking they must be worth a ton.
According to Victoria Police, the victim, Drew Ginn, is a member of the “Oarsome Foursome” rowing team from Australia which wowed many at the Olympics this year. He had four medals he earned from four consecutive Olympics sitting in the back of a Land Rover parked on a public road when someone helped themselves.
The luxury SUV was parked overnight on September 6 with the medals inside. While Ginn didn’t deserve to have his property stolen, leaving anything valuable inside your car overnight while it’s parked on the road is just asking for a smash and grab burglary.
Also stolen from the Land Rover was a wetsuit, a GoPro camera, and some Sony headphones.
Many times, thieves will either try door handles to see if they can get into vehicles without breaking in or will peer through windows. If they see something good inside, they’ll use a glass break to gain access, then take whatever valuables they can find in addition to whatever they spotted.
While it’s wise to try hiding anything valuable you do leave inside your ride, it’s just a smarter move to take them inside your house or wherever you’re staying. Hopefully Ginn’s medals will be found soon considering they’re distinct.
