Motorcycle YouTuber Sean Kerr lives in Middle Tennessee, so he was close enough to the devastation of Hurricane Helene to get to the scene sooner than many others. Still, arriving at distribution centers of aid wasn’t exactly easy for the guy and his friends, plus what they were met with when they did get closer to hard-hit areas like Asheville, North Carolina shocked them.
Watch an Arkansas trooper chase down a guy on a moped.
The efforts made in these impromptu relief efforts was documented in a video uploaded to the Bikes and Beards account and it’s definitely worth a watch if you want to understand what’s going on in that part of that country. That alone we think is admirable, apart from Kerr and his buddies taking much-needed supplies to people who lost everything.
Like everyone else, Kerr had trouble finding roads that were open and in good repair. On one narrow forest road, he had to turn around because two semi-trucks tried taking that route, getting stuck in the turns – that’s happened quite a bit.
Other roads were so damaged that even though they weren’t technically shut down, there was no way the Mercedes Sprinter could negotiate the mangled messes. All that cost time as they were trying to get to a relief center before sundown.
Even worse, word of some locals raiding trucks and other vehicles as they were desperate for provisions made Kerr and his buddy concerned for their safety.
Thankfully, their determination paid off as they found a route into North Carolina and to the relief center. But it was late into the night by the time of their arrival.
After returning home, Kerr said he was struck by how everyone he saw was earnestly trying to help survivors of the storm. He was also shocked at how inaccurate GPS info about which roads were open and closed was. That’s something to think about if you’re ever in an emergency situation.
