Major League Baseball player Kris Bryant, who plays third base for the Colorado Rockies, recently fell victim to car theft in an unusual, although increasingly popular, way. His $300,000 Lamborghini Huracan was being transported by a company from Colorado to Las Vegas, Nevada but never arrived.

The former Chicago Cubs player reported the theft and authorities started investigating. It turns out some hackers got into the system for the auto transport service, re-routing delivery to a different location in Las Vegas.
We’ve seen this trick used before, with some high-end rides stolen by thieves who never produce a gun and don’t have to even break into a vehicle. Transport drivers often don’t question destination changes since they’re fairly common in the business.
After some detective work, police were able to find the Lamborghini supercar, which was being driven by an unnamed suspect. That person was charged with operating a multi-state car theft ring, reports ABC 7 Chicago. Why this individual hasn’t been named is unclear to us.
Several other people were also identified by police as being part of the car theft ring. We’re assuming they’ve been arrested as well. The report does mention that several other stolen rides were recovered by investigators.
In the meantime, this means Bryant has or eventually will get his Huracan back. Sometimes recovered vehicles have to be processed for evidence before they’re turned over to the rightful owner.
These auto transport theft schemes are just the latest in innovative, creative ways criminals are trying to take vehicles. Whether you’re dealing with theft through deception, intimidation, or force, there is one key way to assist in recovering your ride.
Investing in tracking devices for your vehicle is key and something we hope most people with high-end vehicles as well as regular rides have done. With less expensive options like Apple AirTags, it’s a great idea to have more than one tracker on your car, just in case.
