American rapper and songwriter Kendrick Lamar has enjoyed plenty of success in his music career. With that comes untold amounts of wealth. Yet the man who could probably buy a Lamborghini or McLaren on a whim instead is showing off the 1987 Buick Grand National Regal GNX he just acquired.
Pharrell Williams can’t park his Cybertruck.
What many consider to be the quintessential American muscle car of the 80s enjoys a strong cult following and Lamar is squarely in that camp. Posting photos on Instagram of his new ride, which looks to be in cherry condition as it sits in a car trailer, while talking about change in his life.
In that post, Lamar pays homage to late cousin “Pat Dogg” and added a photo of the two of them playing with a remote controlled GNX when they were kids.
But the rapper’s strong connection with the Buick muscle car goes even deeper. Complex reports that he was driven home from the hospital after being born in a GNX, although it probably wasn’t the same one he bought.
Perhaps that’s why in his Instagram post Lamar talks about when “life get real tricky… the best thing you can do is find a gnx.” We love cars and they can absolutely put a smile on your face, but connecting with something nostalgic from your childhood at a time of change, struggle, and transition can be downright cathartic.
And with a car, you get inside, surrounded by the memories, fire up the engine and are greeted by the familiar sounds, there’s just nothing quite like it. Lamar’s GNX looks perfect on the inside, so we imagine he dropped quite a bit on the muscle car. Still, it probably means more to him than some modern exotic supercar and if that’s the salve his soul needs, more power to him.
