Jason Kelce, former Philadelphia Eagles center, is a car guy, so it might surprise some that he let a group of teenagers EV swap his 1986 Chevy K10 truck. There are a few reasons why he made the move and they might not be all what you’re thinking. He explains everything in a video the former professional football player recently uploaded.
Check out Travis Kelce’s tight car collection.
Kelce explains that the K10 pickup has been his for several years but “has never run right.” What exactly that means is open to debate, something we’re sure especially K10 enthusiasts will get into since the man doesn’t explain at all.
Does the NFL player not understand the truck or is there an inherent design flaw? Or was that just a pretense to yank the powertrain, replacing it with an all-electric setup?
Whatever the reason, Kelce learned through his brother Travis about Kansas City’s Operation Breakthrough where at-risk youth learn different skills. More specifically, the program’s Ignition Lab was swapping a Tessla powertrain into a classic Chevelle and the former football player thought it would be great to have them do the same thing with his Chevy K10.
Doing EV conversions on classic cars has been a controversial thing for years. The cost of these conversions has kept many from doing them, but they might become more common as EV powertrains from wrecked rides are more plentiful. Plus, some automakers even offer “crate engine” EV swap solutions.
In this case, it’s obvious Kelce’s decision to do the swap had some ulterior motives. Our cynical side tells us this was done to get attention and publicity for the man’s new YouTube channel and it’s working.
But we think he also wanted to highlight a program he feels is helping youth who really need it. Even if you’re not a fan of EV conversions, you have to admit it’s great seeing teenagers working with their hands instead of just playing video games or recording TikTok dances.
