House Blocks Traffic On An Arizona Highway

Everyone hates road construction, but when it helps lead to a mobile home that’s being transported on the highway getting stuck, backing up traffic, things really get bad. That’s exactly what happened in a bizarre story out of Tempe, Arizona recently.

Rod Stewart is selling his cars for an interesting reason.

The truck hauling the mobile home took a transition ramp from Interstate 10 westbound to US 60 eastbound, apparently not realizing construction narrowed the ramp so the mobile home couldn’t fit. It took hours for crews to free the structure as traffic in the area snarled.

You can see where the wide load became stuck is in an area where movable cement construction barriers come in on both sides of the ramp in what some commuters lovingly refer to as a “toboggan run.”

In the picture of the stuck vehicle shared by Arizona Department of Transportation via X, a pilot vehicle with the “wide load” banner is behind, not in front of, the stuck mobile home. It’s unclear if that played a factor in the incident, although that didn’t stop users on the social media site from speculating.

Plenty of people got on the site to crack jokes about the accident and also to voice their frustration with ADOT, the truck, and whatever else they wanted to blame. But most laid into ADOT for what they perceive as slow progress on construction in the area, already having led to traffic slowdowns on the regular during rush hour.

Can you imagine being one of the first vehicles to come across this stuck mobile home? It was between two and three hours before it was freed, we assume by bringing out a machine to move the concrete barriers over enough so it could squeeze through. And all those people could do is wait.

Who do you think is to blame for this incident: ADOT or the truck? And what would you have done if you were stuck behind it for a few hours?
