To be perfectly honest, we love AM General Humvees for a variety of reasons, so when we saw this 2000 model year M997A2 for sale, it immediately piqued our interest. While they’re not rare, you can’t always find one of these old battlefield ambulances on the market.
This Humvee vs Bugatti review is hilarious.
There are some solid advantages to these things over the other Humvees. Since they were set up to transport injured soldiers in hostile environments, not only are these trucks tough, they have that camper-like compartment in the bed and over the cab.
It’s not too big of a stretch to see how that could be repurposed for overlanding. You could either put a bed in there or get a rooftop tent and make a great living/storage space in the rear compartment.
That’s the great thing about this Humvee is it’s pretty much a blank slate. Its’ no longer camouflaged but instead wears a flat gray, but you could paint it whatever you desire. The interior is military spec, in other words Spartan as they come, so you can dress it up and modify to your heart’s content.
This isn’t a turn-key vehicle if you want to create an adventure vehicle with all the bells and whistles. But if you just want something cool and different to drive around, the seller says it “runs and drives great” so you could just keep it as-is.
But our imaginations are going wild with possibilities. There are storage cubbies in the sides and back, something you see on a lot of overlanders. Put your outdoor kitchen stuff in there, fishing rods, or whatever adventure gear you want to take along and hit the open trail.
