Some people believe having fun with four wheels has to be expensive, but this grocery cart racer listed for sale online at just $2,200 proves otherwise. You can cheat death on a budget and make people laugh at the same time, making this thing an excellent bad idea, if you’re not too chicken to go for it.
Watch a Dodge Charger EV throw down against a Tesla on the drag strip.
This is a grocery store shopping cart with the bottom section cut off, same with the top section where kids sit, so just the main basket. The chassis is 1.25-inch tubing that was cut and welded in a custom job by the owner. There’s a simple steering mechanism and steering wheel, little go-kart style wheels and axles, plus brakes.
It even has a Corbeau racing seat and some makeshift headlights.
Around back is a gas motor, although the listing doesn’t give any specs on it. The thing has a car-sized muffler, so hopefully that means it doesn’t drone big time. But we would ask questions about this thing’s powertrain for sure.
According to the listing, over 50 people have driven the shopping cart go-kart and all of them “had a blast.” It does look fun, so that’s believable.
However, there’s one big problem. The guy switched the pull cord for the motor to a starter, but that went out recently. He claims the motor started and the kart drove “a couple of weeks ago.” If you’re fine with a repair up front, it sounds like the owner is negotiable on price.
The guy who’s selling this thing says he built it a couple of years ago, fulfilling a dream of his. Now he’s selling that dream so someone else can live it. Hopefully you don’t die for it, but what a way to go out!
