A lot of people think golf carts are completely harmless. While they can’t go nearly as fast as cars and weigh only a fraction as much, you can still die while behind the wheel of one or even as just a passenger along for the ride. A recent fatal accident in Florida demonstrates it is in fact possible.
Watch people work together to catch a runaway dog on a freeway.
A 74-year-old man who was driving his golf cart through a Brooksville, Florida development called Clover Leaf Forest RV Resort died after crashing, reports the Miami Herald. Investigators weren’t entirely sure why the man died but there are at least two possibilities.
What’s know is that sometime before 11 am on December 9 the man, whose identity hasn’t been released, was driving his golf cart along a designated path by Meetinghouse Lane. He suffered some sort of medical emergency and lost control of the cart, which left the path, hit a tree, and he was ejected into a large pond nearby.
Someone found him dead in the water later. Florida Highway Patrol is leading the investigation into the exact cause of his death.
From the report it seems authorities are trying to ascertain if it was the medical episode which directly killed the man or if he in fact drowned. Either way, that’s a horrible way to go. And it’s one of those things you just can’t really predict or prepare against, other than maybe getting an annual physical. Even then, people develop medical conditions which go undetected until they suddenly manifest.
While golf carts can seem silly and fun, this goes to show they can get going fast enough to eject someone if they were to suddenly crash. That alone should give you pause before goofing off with them at your next round of golf with the buddies.
