After an investigation, the National Transportation Safety Board says dirt racer Scott Bloomquist likely intentionally crashed his airplane. It’s a sad revelation and something people have wondered about.
Bad oil change leads to disaster in an LS-swapped Firebird.
If you don’t recall, back on August 16, 2024 Bloomquist crashed his airplane into a barn located next to the airstrip on is property in Tennessee. Some wondered if the racer suffered a medical event or a malfunction led to the improbable crash. A few even joked he wasn’t a good pilot.
But it seems the aircraft hit a building to ensure Bloomquist wouldn’t survive the impact. It was a tragic way for a man so celebrated in motorsports to exit this life.
Bloomquist died at the age of 60 after dominating the Lucas Oil dirt Late Model series as the winningest driver ever. In addition, he was a World of Outlaws Late Model champ with over 30 victories, with many considering him one of the best dirt track racers to have ever been behind the wheel.
In fact, he was inducted into the National Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame back in 2002. To many, the man seemed to have it all.
But even with all that success, Bloomquist suffered in a different way. In 2019 he crashed his motorcycle in Daytona and had lingering effects in his legs and other portions of his lower body. In fact, he had to stay in the hospital because of a horsefly bite on his leg he couldn’t feel, thanks to numbness after the motorcycle crash.
The man also suffered from chronic back problems and eventually had to undergo surgery.
Complicating his health further, Bloomquist was diagnosed with prostate cancer about a year before he crashed his plane. It’s unclear what his diagnosis was last August.
Nobody is saying any of that was a factor in Bloomquist’s alleged suicide, but it wouldn’t be shocking. Sadly, many people do commit suicide after they lose all hope in life.
Bloomquist’s family released a statement to let everyone know they’re not commenting on the NTSB investigation findings or the plane crash. We can’t imagine the paint they’re feeling.
