For some reason, drivers of four-wheel-drive vehicles like this Jeep Wrangler tend to think they can drive into ocean surf and be just fine. But this person quickly learned the might of the Pacific Ocean is superior to their Trail Rated ride and had to be rescued by police. The Jeep didn’t fare nearly as well.

According to Newport Beach Fire Department, someone called 911 at about 5:30 am on December 14 to report the amphibious assault vehicle floating out into the ocean. Maybe the driver saw how WWII Jeeps could drive from landing craft through deep water and onto the beach and decided to try something similar.
We’re guessing at some point the engine stalled out because of the water. Also, as you can see in the photos taken by firefighters, the surf was pretty wild. Those waves are enough to push just about any vehicle around like it’s a Hot Wheels toy.
Police were first on the scene and were able to pluck the driver out of the Wrangler. That person was transported to a hospital for assessment, although we don’t know if it was for hypothermia or something mental health.
Heavy equipment was brought in to drag the disabled Jeep out of the salt water. With the volatile early morning surf, that wasn’t exactly easy.
People with Jeeps often believe they can get through any conditions, especially if they have a factory spec ride. While Wranglers certainly are highly capable off-roaders, it’s true that the best ones are built, not bought.
But even the best built Jeeps would be hard pressed to take on the might of the Pacific Ocean like this. When military Jeeps did drive off ships and through the ocean, it was under calm conditions, at low depths, and with specific modifications made in advance.
