There’s no doubt about it: modern off-roader options have become ridiculously expensive. But you don’t have to break the bank to go wheeling since there are options like this 1996 Mitsubishi Pajero Mini VR-2. Before you scoff at its size and oddness, that might be exactly what you need.
Learn about the duck defying authorities in Switzerland.
As vehicles in the US and other markets have grown to accommodate more safety features, tech, even expanding waistlines, the reality is a behemoth is at a disadvantage on the trail. This Mitsubishi has a much better breakover angle with those tiny little tires than a lot of the modern rigs people think they need.

Plus, the shorter overall length helps it to navigate tight turns modern SUVs can struggle with. Sometimes, smaller is better.
The Pajero is what was called the Montero in this market. This is a JDM vehicle or it’s from Japan and has a right-hand-drive layout. That might be weird, but it’s also kind of cool and not that big of a deal as long as you can get over it.
For JDM fans this might be a dream ride. It’s simple, easy to fix and maintain, plus these things are like little mountain goats. This one has about 60,000 miles on it, so as long as you treat it right, it should last a long time.

The seller says there’s no rust, it has a built-in grille guard, some aftermarket fog lights mounted in the center of the front bumper, four-wheel drive with high and low gears, automatic transmission, power steering, power windows, power locks, and a key fob.
While it has cloth upholstery instead of leather, the interior looks rather clean. We know from experience these rigs are simple and effective outdoor recreation rides. And at just $6,500 it’s hard to pass on something like this.
