Many enthusiasts and even non-car people have GPS trackers hidden on their ride to aid in recovering it in the case of theft. But all technology is a tool, so people can use it for good or ill as actress Jessica Serfaty unfortunately found out in an unpleasant way recently. Thankfully, it was another piece of technology she uses which alerted her to the danger.
Violent road rage assault triggered by a bad parking job.
Citing sources within law enforcement, TMZ says Serfaty was alerted by her iPhone that an Apple AirTag had been following every turn she took in her Range Rover while tooling around Malibu, California. That’s a scary situation to face for sure.
Reportedly, Serfaty was immediately concerned someone had stashed the tracking device in her vehicle for nefarious purposes. That’s a natural assumption, even if you’re not a famous actress. After all, there are sick people out there who have anything but good intentions.
After she called authorities for help, some sheriff’s deputies responded to the scene but were unable to locate the AirTag. The report speculates the device might have fallen out of the Range Rover or been removed.
We know you can have an AirTag play a noise, although you can remove the speaker from one, so that doesn’t always work for finding where they’re stashed.
Even though the AirTag was long gone, info about it was captured by Serfaty’s iPhone. Detectives are reportedly using that to hopefully track whoever put in on the Range Rover and figure out why.
There are a few reasons why someone would hide an AirTag on another person’s car, and none of them are altruistic. Sometimes thieves do it so they can figure out when your vehicle is somewhere unsecure and thus can be more easily stolen. Stalkers do it to learn where you go and when. Burglars do it to learn where they can attack you when you’re vulnerable.
