People are losing their minds right now after Dodge reported its full 2024 sales figures and one Viper was on the list. That’s right, in 2024 someone bought a new Dodge Viper from a dealership, not a used one. What so many are missing though is two new Dodge Vipers were sold by dealers in 2023.
The off-road Dodge Viper build has finally gone off-roading.
In case you’ve forgotten, the final model year for the Dodge Viper was 2017. The American supercar, which packed a real punch for its final fifth generation, ended with several special edition models issued, some in incredibly limited quantities.
However, just because the Viper hasn’t been made in years doesn’t mean dealers have unloaded all of them. Some have held onto new Vipers as a crown jewel in their showroom. Others likely have sat on their Viper to try getting more for the vehicle well after production ended.
Unfortunately, the sales report from Stellantis, Dodge’s parent company, doesn’t specify if the Viper sold last year was one of the special edition models.
With an 8.4-liter V10 engine pumping out 645-horsepower and 600 lb.-ft. of torque, the fifth generation Dodge Viper is quite potent. A six-speed manual transmission adds to the fun, plus other than electronic stability control and traction control, it’s free from most of the driver aids that permeate modern cars, making it more engaging and challenging to drive.
But the supercar could do 0-60 in 3.5 seconds and break past 200 mph on a track, making them a favorite of many enthusiasts. However, slow sales didn’t help with the continuation of the Viper nameplate. Dodge at the time claimed it was the side curtain airbag requirement which led to the demise of the Viper, but we know a lack of interest from buyers who could afford the car was the real reason.
However, people still adore the Viper, us included. We expect there might be a few more new ones out there which will trickle through the sales data for a bit longer. But most of the fifth-gen Vipers have met their first owner, even if they’re sadly sitting in some preservation bubble in a climate controlled garage.
