Boat Debris Damages Cars In Boston Tunnel

Estimated read time 2 min read

We feel many drivers these days are used to being coddled, so when something unexpected comes up on the road they don’t know what to do. Blame it on modern electronics, plenty of nanny state overwatch, or whatever you want, any of those might have contributed to boat debris in a Boston tunnel causing havoc for morning commuters on August 16.

Man with a pitchfork throws debris onto interstate from an overpass.

As reported by WCVB, five cars hit a piece of a boat left on the road in a tunnel after an earlier crash. Images of the aftermath shows what looks like a large rudder, probably knocked off in the collision from before and somehow missed by crews until people ran over it.

Among the casualties is a guy’s Smart Fortwo. He seems pretty devastated, telling a WCVB reporter how much he loves it. But an insurance adjustor warned him that the bent wheels and other damage likely will lead to the little thing being totaled.

Considering how worthless Smarts are on the open market, that’s hardly surprising. We can imagine in a city known for tight parking, having something so small is a huge advantage. Maybe he can import a Kei car from Japan?

The point of all this is you never know what you might encounter on the road. If you do see a piece of debris like this, the worst thing you can do is suddenly swerve. That might lead to a collision with another car, including one going the opposite direction, so don’t do that.

Suddenly stopping is better, but on a busy road in morning traffic you might get hit from behind. Sometimes the only real solution is to hit whatever is in your way and hope the aftermath isn’t too bad. Just remember, if you’re in a Smart car you might have to get a real ride later.
