Tragically, 7-year-old Elienisse Zoe Diaz died after crashing in a NHRA Junior Dragster event on February 2 at Orlando Speed World Dragway. This is the sort of thing any parent dreads, whether their child is involved in motorsports or any other activity.

Details about how Diaz died haven’t been released. We only know the crash happened early on after she had only made a few passes on the drag strip. She was apparently in the first grade.
In a Go Fund Me campaign post from the family, they said it was Elienisse’s dream to drive a Jr. Dragster. However, for two days after the crash, she fought for her life and ultimately lost, passing away on February 4.
NHRA launched the Jr. Drag Racing League as a way for youth to get into the sport, starting back in the early 90s. Kids as young as 5 pilot half-scale dragsters down the strip, learning all the dynamics of drag racing so they can hone their skills.
Instead of going a full quarter mile, competitors in the Jr. Drag Racing League compete on the eighth mile using cars patterned after Top Fuel dragsters. Their cars obviously aren’t as fast or powerful, plus their speed and elapse time is restricted based on their age, in the name of safety.
Orlando Speed World Dragway published the following statement about the tragic accident: “We are deeply heartbroken by the tragic incident that took place at OSW on Sunday. Our thoughts and prayers are with Elienisse’s family, and all those affected, including our racing community. Motorsports is built on passion, but moments like these remind us of the risks that come with what we love. While injuries can heal, the pain of loss is immeasurable. We stand together in support, mourning, and prayer during this difficult time. We extend our deepest condolences to those grieving and will continue to uplift them in our thoughts.”
Drag racing is a dangerous sport at any level. Our hearts go out to the Diaz family for their loss.
